House Hunting Trips and Being Posted from Edmonton to Ottawa (plus a photo drive by)

No! We're not being posted. However, I wanted to write a little about what it was like when the Canadian Forces posted us to Ottawa from Edmonton.

It was tough. The Canadian had just come back from tour and we had barely had enough time to reacquaint and rebalance ourselves when we told we were moving. The move is the second most stressful time of my life to date.

We went on our House Hunting Trip (or HHT, as the CF like to call it - so. many. acronyms) and had a week to find a house. No pressure or anything, right? We had the best realtor ever, Kathy Tarbox, who really was the most patient woman I've ever come across. After firing our first realtor before even meeting her, we were really lucky to stumble upon Kathy. In that single week we looked at over 90 houses in and around Ottawa (Russell, Embrun, Ottawa, Kars, Kemptville, Orleans), made two offers that fell through and eventually looked an hour south of where we initially planned to live. Now, that was dedication on her part!

These photos were taken after we'd spent a week looking at houses in Ottawa and we were exhausted. There was one night left before we flew home. We hadn't found a house for us and, actually, we were feeling really -ugh- about moving and trying to find somewhere to live.

The biggest thing I remember of that night was how it pounded with rain and it was just awful, weather wise. We were emotionally and physically exhausted, we'd had two offers fall through and we were filled with anxiety. So, we did what we often do when we need to think, we drove. We hopped in the rental car and drove until we found somewhere to buy pizza.

The Canadian and I are big on 'car dates', whereby we pick up easy to eat foods and sit in the car and chat. That night, the pizza was actually pretty gross (note: do not order 'garlic' topping...ever.) but we ate it anyway. We drove and chatted. When the rain became too heavy, we parked in an empty car park and just listened and watched.

The whole evening helped to wash away a lot of our stresses and we were able to make plans. None of those plans actually worked out because we really couldn't foresee the other few offers falling through or our eventual move to Prescott and hour long commutes north. Still, we made plans, and at the time that helped to really give us a purpose and direction.

When I look over these photographs, I just remember feeling so incredibly naive and young. I remember the excitement of moving and starting a new adventure and the weighty feel of having to learn and deal with money issues and housing regulations in this country, it was all a little overwhelming. Most of all, I remember feeling like I was a part of a team. And feeling deeply relieved that I had a partner who would 'sneak' away with me; away from our lovely realtor, my supportive mother in law, and the rigid institution that is the military. Taking that time to take a break and just remember goals and focus on directions was a life saver.

Thankfully, I am not moving this year, that I foresee. I am staying put. But, if you're moving and tackling HHT and postings then I would recommend taking a break while you're navigating all the crazy. Whether it is stopping at starbucks or hunting down a marble slab at 9pm or finding a swimming pool..., just do it!

I am not looking forward to the stress of moving again, but being able to review these very blurry, colourful and memorable pictures is something I wouldn't exchange. There's something about that incredible stress that made me realize I have a wonderful partner in crime, and that's the best feeling! :)

Free Phone Wallpapers

When it comes to phone wallpapers, I like them to be rich and crisp. I took these photos over the summer and I loved them so much that I turned them into wallpapers for my phone.

I thought it only fair to share these with you too. Plus, it's getting kinda cold at the moment, so I have them as my background because I feel as though I'm in need of some warming up!

To access the photos and save them to you phone click on the photo to see an enlarged version then download or save it to your device.

Autumn Hikes in Brockville

My job dictates that I sometimes have to wander out into the wilderness. On one such day, I was running a mini course on photography so I dragged along my big camera and took some of my own photographs. I am so impressed with the results and I love them. I wish I could show all these places to my friends and family in England because sometimes living in Canada is really very magical. I love the colours and the richness and I'm hoping that at some point I'm able to use these as inspiration for a painting.

Stormy Wet Evenings

Muggy sticky days are all that have been happening lately. I made it home on Tuesday in time to watch the big storm clouds break out. Living in England, I'd never before experienced the physical relief that a storm brings. The epic thunder storms we have here are one of my favourite things about this country. It's times like this when I'm incredibly grateful for the wonderful bay windows we have in the back.

I haven't been using my camera all that much lately until a friend asked me about it and I realised I had to start taking more. There is something so delightful about taking photographs of memories, it's been a bit of a struggle finding a balance between being in the moment and documenting it. Focusing on the moment has meant there are less photos to sift through afterwards, which is always good in my books! I think the Canadian would disagree, as you can see, he puts on his bored face when I pull out the camera. I enjoy that his bored face looks similar to a thoughtful face because then he makes for the best candid subject.

Am I alone in my love of storms?

#100happydays

I recently completed #100happydays. I wrote about how exciting it was a little while ago. I didn't say much after that because, if I'm honest, I'm not very good at sticking to projects like this. With that in mind, you can probably imagine my delight when I finished it off last week.

A lot of people asked whether #100happydays was hard. Taking the photos wasn't difficult, the hardest part was finding something that made me 'happy' every day. Everyone has grumpy days and sometimes it can be difficult to find a positive moment every single day. Even though I thought that the gloomier days would have less than excellent photographs, I found it to be the opposite. There are very few images I could point to and say 'oh, yeah, that was a rubbish day'. Doing this project made me look back at the last 100 (108, actually, I got a bit carried away) days and see them in a whole new light.

I found it a great way to log my achievements (painting with clients at work, making bechamel sauce from scratch, trying to smoke a cigar), my favourite pieces of art work, all the foods that excited me and the mini adventure I took with the Canadian to Toronto (or, at least, the best parts of the trip).

There are many stories and comments that accompany most of these images. If you click on each image you should get a large 'pop out' preview of it but if you want to see what's really going on in each one then visit my instagram profile and have a gander.

I've seen many people roll the 100 happy days project into #365happydays but I think 100 was a nice concise one for me. It's made me pretty excited to find other projects to focus on other mini projects. I did the 30 days of selfie, and I've now completed this one. Each time I learn something new. Do you know of any other mini projects? Perhaps some to do with drawing or sketching. I'm so motivated right now that I want to utilise it before it disappears!

Have you tried to participate in #100happydays?
