One Little Word and An Explanation

Last week, I briefly touched upon my one word goal for the year.

This is by far one of the more personal things I've shared on this blog, but I'm determined to see it through. The one small word project seems to be all over the internet and it is, in theory, an excellent way to set simple, small goals for the new year.

There are lots of people out there using their small words to set big goals throughout the year and there are many rules. I thought I'd keep mine simple. Here are my four, not so SMART (but hopefully smart) aims and directions for the year to come.

1. Embrace friendships and new connections.
It's really not an exaggeration to say that I became a bit of a hermit in 2013. Between 2012 and 2013, a lot happened. I went to England twice (twice!) and I spent a lot of time on the phone with family. The Canadian and I were settling into our first house (not condo) and all of a sudden everything was very overwhelming.

Last year, I made very little effort to build up friendships, connections, or networks, and I really felt the lack of it in my life. So, while I still need to hibernate on occasion, I also really need to make the effort to see the wonderful people in my life.

2. Embrace evenings.
Here's a bit of a naughty confession. As soon as the sun goes down, it becomes anything goes time. I don't really know how I got into this mindset but it's totally messing up my productivity. I never feel as though I have time for anything, and in reality, I don't. This isn't because I'm really busy, it's because I'm just not utilising time properly or efficiently. So yes, I could squeeze in extra episodes of Scandal but I really need to start doing the things both boring (chores) and filled with excitement (friend time!).

3. Embrace simplicity and complexity.
I try to do far too much and my brain rarely turns off. This year, I'm going to try to say no, try to keep things simple and, when it can't be simplified, to just enjoy it for what it is, which is complex, rich and life like.

4. Embrace new experiences and the imperfect.
On the other hand, I'm going to say yes more. Yes to camping (ugh), yes to getting up early and taking photographs and yes to just pulling up the floor in the bathroom to see what's underneath. Sometimes simplicity can be found by just doing, not thinking, planning and agonising. I'm going to stop comparing myself to others who are in the midst of their careers and successes, or comparing myself to where I think I should be. Instead, I'm going to focus on all the awesomeness I have to offer and where I want to be going.

Any simple goals and outlines for you this year?
